[UPDATED MESSAGING] Amazon RDS for SQL Server is cancelling end of support campaign for some older DB minor versions of SQL Server 2017, 2019.

This is a follow up message to a previous announcement sent on November 1, 2023. As of March 1, 2024, the previously announced end of support of your Amazon RDS for SQL Server instances running on the following minor versions has been cancelled;

14.0.3281.6 (SQL Server 2017 CU19) 14.00.3294.2 (SQL Server 2017 CU20) 14.00.3356.20 (SQL Server 2017 CU22) 14.00.3381.3 (SQL Server 2017 CU23) 14.00.3401.7 (SQL Server 2017 CU25)

15.00.4043.16 (SQL Server 2019 CU5) 15.00.4073.23 (SQL Server 2019 CU8) 15.00.4153.1 (SQL Server 2019 CU12) 15.00.4198.2 (SQL Server 2019 CU15)

The AWS team did not perform any auto-upgrades. You may continue using these minor versions until further notice. If you have already taken action, you can ignore this notification.

As a best practice, we recommend that you use the following steps and consider upgrading to the latest minor versions.

Upgrade Options:

The Amazon RDS for SQL Server instance(s) running on these older minor versions can be upgraded to the latest minor versions. You can schedule an upgrade to a different minor version by going to the instance modify page in the AWS Management Console and changing the database version to a desired value. If you choose the “Apply Immediately” option, the upgrade will be initiated immediately after exiting the modify page. If you choose not to apply the change immediately, the upgrade will be scheduled during your maintenance window. To find out more information on upgrading please reference this document [1].

You will still be able to restore a SQL Server 2017 and 2019 DB snapshot to a DB instance on a major or minor version that is supported by Amazon RDS for SQL Server, even after the upgrade. For more information on restoring a database in RDS see here [2].
