The following article is out-of-date as of Dec 20, 2023. Please refer to this article for up-to-date information about RDS for PostgreSQL major version 11 end of standard support and changes in Amazon RDS Extended Support opt-in behavior.

PostgreSQL community plans to deprecate PostgreSQL 11 after the 11.22 release [1] and it will not receive any security patches beyond the final community release. Following community timelines, Amazon RDS will end standard support of PostgreSQL major version 11 on 29 February, 2024.

We recommend that you take action and upgrade your PostgreSQL databases (DB) running major version 11 to major version 14 or higher before RDS end of standard support in February, 2024. PostgreSQL 14 includes performance improvements for parallel queries, heavily-concurrent workloads, partitioned tables, logical replication, and vacuuming. PostgreSQL 14 also introduces indexing improvements as well as enhanced JSON capabilities, providing more efficient storage and querying of complex data structures [2]

We strongly recommend that you upgrade your RDS for PostgreSQL 11 DB instances as soon as possible, before February 29, 2024. To learn more about upgrading PostgreSQL major versions in RDS, review the Upgrading Database Versions page [3]

The upgrade timeline for RDS for PostgreSQL 11 instances will be as follows: RDS will upgrade your PostgreSQL 11 database to PostgreSQL 14 or higher during a scheduled maintenance window between March 1, 2024 00:00:01 UTC and March 31, 2024 00:00:01 UTC. On March 31, 2024 00:00:01 AM UTC, any PostgreSQL 11 databases that remain will be automatically upgraded to version 14 or higher regardless of instances’ scheduled maintenance window.

Since postgres 13 and above DBEngines can only be launched on db.t3 and above.

What's the target postgres version of existing instance running on postgres 11 and db.t2 instance type?
