How do I map Availability Zones across my accounts?

I want to map an Availability Zone in my AWS account that doesn't map to the same location as an AZ with the same name in a different account in Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC).

Resolution

Note: If you receive errors when you run AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI) commands, then see Troubleshoot AWS CLI errors. Also, make sure that you're using the most recent AWS CLI version.

Availability Zone names don't map to the same location across accounts. To use Availability Zone IDs to map Availability Zones across accounts, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the AWS Resource Access Manager console.
  2. In the navigation bar, select your AWS Region from the Region selector.
  3. In the right Your Availability Zone ID pane, review the list of Availability Zone names and the Availability Zone IDs that they correspond with.

    Run the following describe-availability-zones AWS CLI command to view your Availability Zone ID information:
    aws ec2 describe-availability-zones --region example-region-name
    Note: Replace example-region-name with the name of your Region.
  4. In the output, identify the Availability Zones that have the same Availability Zone IDs across your accounts. Availability Zones that have the same Availability Zone IDs map to the same physical location.
