Keep IP address when moving to a new instance

Question

I started with the lowest resource instance as a test bed.
I am now attempting to install a program that requires 1G RAM.
Can I keep the IP on the old instance?  As far as I can tell it is gone once I release it?

Related.  I don't find a good sequence recommendation.  
1. Snapshot
2. Create new from snapshot or delete old instance first?

Answer

You can just change the instance type of the instance to get additional resources. See: [Change the instance type](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/ec2-instance-resize.html).

If you are trying to preserve the Public IP that was assigned to the instance, it will be released once you stop the instance. You should use an [Elastic IP](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/elastic-ip-addresses-eip.html).

Thanks.  I set this up under Lightsail.  Looks like I have a lot of reading, and possibly configuration, to do.
