Instance type support in availability zones in the same region

Question

Hey,

If an instance type is supported in one availability zone in a particular region, is it supported in all availability zones in the same region?

For example, let's say I checked that m5.xlarge is supported in region us-east-1, on availability zone us-east-1a.

Can I assume m5.xlarge is supported on us-east-1b and us-east-1c as well?

The support for instance type is per region scope or per availability zone?

Answer

You can determine which instance types are available in a specific availability zone by doing this:

`aws ec2 describe-instance-type-offerings --location-type "availability-zone" --filters Name=location,Values= --region `

For example:

`aws ec2 describe-instance-type-offerings --location-type "availability-zone" --filters Name=location,Values=us-east-1b --region us-east-1`

Answer

Its not necessary the instance type would be available in all AZ's. You might run into error like "Your requested instance type is not supported in your requested Availability Zone" in that case
