Question about degradation?

0

Hello,

Recently, I receive a notice about Lightsail instance degradation from AWS. Given the limited information, I am kind of confusion. Could anyone can help me advise on following question? Thanks in advance.

  1. I got some suggestions from support team, but all of links and introduction are related to EC2, rather than Lightsail. For this reason, it's hard to follow the steps to get answer. Could anyone please share some doc or link related to degradation in Lightsail?

  2. How could I check if my instance is running on EBS-backed AMI? Based on the introduction, looks like instance running on EBS-backed AMI can be re-start easily and will not be terminated. However, the doc only introduces the steps of EBS-backed AMI check in EC2. So, could anyone please share me the steps introduction for Lightsail instance? Thanks a lot.

  3. I tried to "Stop" and "Restart" the instance, then it is running again. So, will it be still terminated on scheduled retire day, or not?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Wayne

A Lightsail instance is, in short words, an EC2 instance which is not visible in the EC2 instances dashboard. So, the links for EC2 instances should work: create an AMI, start, stop, terminate...

As Claire said, every Lighsail instance is an EBS-backed AMI, and as I said before, a Lightsail instance is an EC2 instance, so, the same rules works for both. A Lightsail instance is more easy to manage than a EC2 instance.

Stop or start the instance just do what it says: stop or start the instance. AWS will notify you if any of your Lightsail instances will be retired and the scheduled time to do it because degradation or any other situation. What to do? The same as in EC2 instances: periodical backups (create an AMI) to have the closest version of your current apps.

I am not 100% sure ... but I think, if you stop & restart the instance, it should restart on new hardware that hasn't been flagged as degraded ... so you should be OK.

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for using Lightsail! If you have received a notice for lightsail instance degration, you should be able to find some instructions from the email to resolve the issue. Start and stop the instance will prevent the instance from being terminated. Lightsail instance is running on EBS-backed AMI. You can simply re-start the instance from our console or calling lightsail APIs.

You can also monitor health status of lightsail instance from the instance metrics. Please check out our new feature on monitoring and alarming https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2020/02/amazon-lightsail-now-supports-resource-monitoring-alarming-and-notifications/

Hope this answers your questions.

Thanks
Claire

David, how are you? Thanks a lot for your help again. After stop & restart, the instance works well now. I think will be okay as you mentioned. Best regards and keep safe during this special period.

Hi Neoacevedo, thanks a lot for your help and detailed response. Given my very limited IT knowledge, the minor difference between EC2 and Lighsail also make me lost sometimes. Hope all the best and keep safe during this period.
