Your aws account is separate from your amazon.com account. For AWS account follow this instruction to change your email address: Changing root email address: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/accounts/latest/reference/manage-acct-update-root-user.html

For amazon.com account you can follow this instruction: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=G3JHAKLM2QKM6NXS#:~:text=You%20can%20update%20your%20name,like%20to%20update%2C%20select%20Edit.

Typically, as we speak, you just let root account to create others, and use root for minimal needed operation such as organisation, control tower operations and others.

That’s how you separate it from the rest of other accounts.

This is the answer I got from Amazon Q. I have an account created before August 2017, so it sounds like it is not possible currently other than creating a new AWS account and migrate resources to the new account

To separate the AWS root user account from the amazon.com account:

AWS accounts created before August 2017 are linked to an amazon.com account, sharing the same email and login credentials.

Currently there is no way to fully separate these accounts. AWS is working on a solution but does not have an estimated release date yet.

As a workaround, you can create a new AWS account and migrate all resources to the new account. The AWS documentation provides guidance on how to migrate resources between accounts.

If you are willing to lose the amazon.com retail account, you can open a support case with AWS Accounts and Billing team to request decoupling the accounts. However, this would impact the linked amazon.com account.

It is recommended to use strong credentials for the AWS root user account and enable MFA. Root user access should be restricted and day-to-day tasks should be performed with IAM users that have minimum required permissions.
