S3 Object-Lock and Glacier Vault Lock - Third Party Backup Support

0

Hey all,

I need some help understanding if there is Out-of-Box support for WORM capabilities with third-party backup software such as Veeam. The customer is looking to have Veeam write to S3, then tier to Glacier in GovCloud, and would like to enable WORM (Write Once, Read Many) for compliance reasons. I have a few questions:

  1. Is it possible to enable the capability from the backup applications policy, or does the policy need to be enabled manually on the bucket/object (https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/object-lock.html). If the latter is correct, can we pre-create the buckets with the correct policy, or does the backup application typically manage the S3 bucket creation.

  2. Same question for the Glacier Vault (https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/glacier-vault-lock/). The hope here is that we can intelligently tier, or export the tapes, and they will be stored in a locked Glacier Vault.

Overall, we are trying to achieve WORM capability without having to manage the locking functionality. If this isn't possible today, I wonder if having an event/lambda tied to the bucket/glacier vault creation would be an acceptable way to ensure the locks are applied to new buckets/objects.

Thanks in advance!

Object lock support directly in Veeam looks to be a new feature for the release of V10 (coming in the February) -- See https://go.veeam.com/v10 -- "S3 object lock functionality and immutable backups."

I haven't heard anything about Glacier Vault Lock support in Veeam.

More broadly I might have a look at this white paper on Backup and Restore in AWS:

https://d1.awsstatic.com/BackupRecovery/Partner-Backup-and-Restore_2019_FINAL.pdf

This paper highlights a number of partner solutions, including a few which note Glacier Vault Lock support. Also, perhaps the Backup and Restore Partner Solutions page:
