[Create a snapshot](https://lightsail.aws.amazon.com/ls/docs/how-to/article/lightsail-how-to-create-a-snapshot-of-your-instance) of your Lightsail instance to use as a backup. Lightsail snapshots preserve the state of your instance at the time the snapshot was taken. 


After you create a snapshot, you can [delete the running Lightsail instance](https://lightsail.aws.amazon.com/ls/docs/en/articles/delete-an-amazon-lightsail-instance). If you need that instance again, you can [create a new Lightsail instance](https://lightsail.aws.amazon.com/ls/docs/how-to/article/lightsail-how-to-create-instance-from-snapshot) from that snapshot.


**Note:** Snapshots are billed at a lower rate than running Lightsail instances.
