Can't connect to AuroraMySQL db

I have my first Aurora DB cluster up and running and successfully attached to an EC2 instance. I'm now trying to connect a SQL client to the writer endpoint - but with no success. I am following the directions here: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/AuroraUserGuide/CHAP_GettingStartedAurora.CreatingConnecting.Aurora.html I am now on Step 3: Connect to an Aurora MySql DB cluster. I have successfully run: ssh -i /home/cloudshell-user/ec2-db-kp.pem ec2-user@ec2-54-218-87-124.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com And mariadb105 is installed. But when I attempt to run: mysql -h database-test1.cluster-c188oussik9h.us-west-2.rds.amazonaws.com -P 3306 -u admin -p I get: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'database-test1.cluster-c188oussik9h.us-west-2.rds.amazonaws.com' (115) In addition, I can't seem to connect from the internet to my AWS Internet Gateway. But according to the Reachability Analyzer all internal data routes work. Dont know what to do next.
