Ideal storage for redundant backups

0

I'd like to use Glacier for weekly redundant backups which will roll over only at the minimum mark (90 or 180 days, whichever), it'd only be accessed in the event of catastrophic failure of our other backup systems. Ideally the storage method would be the least expensive for saving data, but available to download, or retrieve in any other method, as quickly as possible even if at a very high cost. Some time ago I read that certain services would courrier you a storage device with all of the necessary information within hours of your request, is such a thing possible with Glacier? I'd probably select the Canada-central region, as we're in the Montreal area, if that matters. Thanks!

Hello.

As you know, S3 Glacier is an inexpensive storage class suitable for long-term backups.
There are three types of S3 Glacier.
If you need to retrieve data in milliseconds, I think it is better to use "S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval".
There are also "S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval" and "S3 Glacier Deep Archive", but it takes time to retrieve them.

  • Hello, Thank you for that. I may be mis-understanding the concept of how snowball works, as that's what I was thinking of originally, but if I'd like to quickly retrieve information, due to catastrophic failure and/or complete loss of our physcial infrastructure (flooding, fire, robbery, etc), even downloading it would take several days. Could I make use of a service like snowball, or snowcone even, to retrieve it quicker, even if it's stored in some rendition of Glacier?

  • AWS Snowball is a physical device used to migrate large amounts of on-premises data to AWS. Unfortunately it cannot be used to retrieve data from S3 Glacier.
