Does AWS Device Farm support Android background service execution?

The app I would like to test executes Android background services which perform various network tests to various sites. These results are reported to our backend for analysis. The UI is negligible, logging a terse test summary as tests occur. I started a session on a device, uploaded our app & set the appropriate permissions. The UI indicates tests are beginning. However, the background services do not appear to be executing. Is the AWS Device Farm intended to support UI interactions but NOT background service execution? Is there some setting in the console that would enable background service execution? Thanks.
