Unexpected Charges After Learner Lab Reset – No Active Resources

0

Hello, I’m a student using AWS Academy Learner Lab. I reset my lab on May 24, and when I checked on May 25, all my resources were deleted. However, my cost unexpectedly increased to over $22, and the forecast shows $47+ even though I haven’t deployed anything new.

The billing details show charges for EC2 (Other and Compute), VPC, RDS, and ELB, but I currently have no active resources in my account. I also have limited access and cannot view or delete all items .

Can someone please help me understand why this is happening and how to stop any further charges? Should I reset again or wait for support?

I understand your concern about unexpected charges in your AWS Academy Learner Lab environment after resetting your lab. This is a common issue that can happen even when you believe all resources have been deleted.

There are several possible reasons for these continued charges:

1. Hidden resources: Some resources may not be immediately visible in your primary dashboard. These could include EBS snapshots, Elastic IP addresses not associated with running instances, or networking components like NAT gateways.

2. Resources in different regions: You might have resources running in AWS regions other than your primary one. Check all regions for any forgotten resources.

3. Billing lag: AWS charges for the time resources were active. You may see charges on your bill for resources that were active earlier in the month, even if they're no longer running.

4. Stopped but not terminated instances: If EC2 instances were stopped but not fully terminated, you may still be charged for associated EBS volumes.

5. Data transfer charges: You might incur charges for data transferred out of AWS to the internet or between regions.

Since you're using AWS Academy Learner Lab, I recommend:

1. Reset your lab again to ensure all resources are properly terminated.

2. Contact your instructor or AWS Academy support as they can provide specific guidance for the Learner Lab environment.

3. For future use, be careful to terminate (not just stop) all resources when you're done using them, and check across all regions before ending your lab sessions.

The limited access in your Learner Lab environment is by design, but resetting the lab should properly clean up all resources and prevent further charges.
