Hello. Amazon EKS is certified Kubernetes-conformant, so existing applications that run on upstream Kubernetes are compatible with Amazon EKS.

It is possible to join custom Worker nodes to EKS clusters, however, the documented and supported OS in EKS are:

  • Amazon Linux 2
  • Bottlerocket
  • Windows (for Windows based containers)

EKS releases optimized AMI's for those Operating systems in a regular basis: [https://docs.aws.amazon.com/eks/latest/userguide/worker.html]

You can install a third party OS in your worker nodes, however it is recommended to have the expertise in-house or acquire support for the third party vendor in order to troubleshoot issues. Regard to FreeBSD, I am not aware of an official integration between Kubernetes and BSD based system, most particularly because BSD and Linux rely in different technologies for process isolation (jails vs cgroups).
