I want to troubleshoot a Scheduled Maintenance notification in Amazon Lightsail.

Short Description

AWS sends you a scheduled maintenance notification before the hardware that hosts your Lightsail instance is serviced. Lightsail isn't available when AWS performs maintenance on it. AWS will either stop or reboot your instance after scheduled maintenance is complete.

Resolution

Check the Scheduled Maintenance notification for important information

When you receive a scheduled maintenance notification, check the notification for two pieces of information:

  • The time period when AWS will perform maintenance on your Lightsail instance.
  • Whether AWS will stop or reboot Lightsail after the maintenance is complete.

For example, a scheduled maintenance notification looks like the following:

  • "One or more of your Amazon Lightsail instances is scheduled for maintenance in a 2 hour window starting on Wed, 10 May 2023 12:00:00 GMT.
Maintenance activity will result in the following Lightsail instance(s) in the eu-west-2 region to be unavailable and then rebooted."

In the previous example, note the following:

  • Lightsail is unavailable for two hours on Wed, 10 May 2023 at 12:00:00 GMT
  • AWS reboots Lightsail after the maintenance is complete.

Troubleshoot the scheduled maintenance notification

After you note when AWS will maintain Lightsail, and whether AWS will stop or reboot your instance after maintenance, complete the following steps:

  1. Make sure that you won't need access to Lightsail when AWS performs maintenance on it.
  2. If you will need access to Lightsail, then proceed to step 3.
    -or-
If you won't need access, then proceed to step 5.
  3. Stop Lightsail. For more information, see Start, stop, or restart your Lightsail instance.
  4. Start Lightsail, and then take no further action.
Note: The event status in your AWS Health Dashboard doesn't update from Active to Completed immediately.
  5. Make sure that AWS will reboot your instance after maintenance. If AWS will reboot your instance after maintenance, then take no further action.
    - or -
If AWS will stop your instance, then proceed to step 6.
  6. After the scheduled maintenance on your instance is finished, start Lightsail. For more information, see the instructions in step 3.
