SMS not sending when link attached

We send sms messages when jobs are completed and it works fine, but when we attach a link to a pdf to view the report the sms will not send. It seems it is blocked. Any help?

I had the exact same issue. Started off testing SMS with links, and found I could send aws or google URLs fine, but not other URLs. I raised a support ticket, and they advised they had to register the URL I wanted to send through the SMS 'aggregator' which was done. But afterwards, I couldn't send any SMS at all, with or without URLs, had the 'success' messages, but nothing received. Had not hit any limits. Support advised my new issue was caused by a routing change, and after investigating, the 'aggregator' fixed. It was a wild journey. But I can now send SMS with the required URL successfully. Suggest raising a support ticket, some countries will require URLs being registered - this is a spam prevention thing.

I imagine that the pdf link looks suspicious. Try to follow the AWS SNS SMS Best Practices found here: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/sns/latest/dg/channels-sms-best-practices.html.

Use valid, safe links

If your message includes links, double-check the links to make sure that they work. Test your links on a device outside your corporate network to ensure that links resolve properly. Because of the 160-character limit of SMS messages, very long URLs could be split across multiple messages. You should use redirect domains to provide shortened URLs. However, you shouldn't use free link-shortening services such as tinyurl.com or bitly.com, because carriers tend to filter messages that include links on these domains. However, you can use paid link-shortening services as long as your links point to a domain that is dedicated to the exclusive use of your company or organization.

Personally I think the behavior of opening a PDF from my text messages is odd and non-standard. Maybe you an have a link in the text message that:

  • loads a website that can redirect to the PDF
  • kicks off a workflow that sends an email

I hope these suggestions help.

  • Hi Justin. Thanks for the response. I have looked at the paid versions of short codes for links and might try that. The thing is the messages are going to people who do not necessarily have a login in our system, they are customer of our customers. For now, we have disabled the link.

  • Hey blueclerk_chris, what if you developed a brand new website just for this where the customer wouldn't need a login. That may not be recommended if the information is sensitive.

  • Hi Justin. The link is to a pdf that you do not need a login so I am not sure if a new website would be any different. Also, we have disabled the link, but we are still not getting messages. In AWS I see 5/5 failed to be delivered, but I know the numbers are correct. It does not show me why at all.
