Answering my own question I was trying to test the SMS sending using a pinpoint campaign. This happens to be not permitted. According to https://docs.aws.amazon.com/pinpoint/latest/userguide/messages.html "You can't send a test message to a segment—you have to send it to individual users". This is the exact reason it was not working.
Hi! If you are in the Pinpoint Sandbox, keep in mind that you can only send SMS messages to verified destination numbers.
Another place to look is the ChannelType of your Campaign. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/pinpoint/latest/apireference/apps-application-id-channels-apns.html
Amazon provides a Amazon Pinpoint SMS Simulator that can help with testing and viewing event records as well: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/pinpoint/latest/userguide/channels-sms-simulator.html.
As for troubleshooting, while Data Events (Sends) are not logged in AWS CloudTrail (https://docs.aws.amazon.com/pinpoint/latest/developerguide/logging-using-cloudtrail.html), you can use Amazon CloudWatch to collect metrics on your Pinpoint campaign. More information on how to set that up: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/pinpoint/latest/userguide/monitoring.html

Hi, thanks for the answer. Regarding the test numbers, do I need to somehow verify them as destination endpoints in my sandbox?
