What is threshold limits for AWS Step Functions?

AWS Step Functions has a hard quota of 25,000 entries in the execution event history. Are these quota function wise or per account wise? Also how can i calculate how much quota is my step function consuming?

Hi,

AWS Step Functions has a hard quota of 25,000 entries in the execution event history per execution, but AWS provides some workarounds described on the following developer guide page to avoid reaching limits on long-running executions.

The quota for AWS Step Functions is applied at the account level, not per function. The limit of 25,000 entries in the execution event history applies to the total number of entries across all your Step Functions executions within the AWS account.

To calculate how much quota your Step Functions are consuming, you need to consider the number of entries in the execution event history. Each state transition, input/output data, and other relevant information is recorded as an event in the execution history.

You can use the AWS Step Functions APIs or the AWS Management Console to retrieve the execution event history for your Step Functions executions. The APIs provide methods like ListExecutions and GetExecutionHistory that allow you to fetch the execution history and analyze the number of events.

Keep in mind that other operations, such as starting executions or creating state machines, do not directly consume the execution event history quota. It is primarily related to the number of events recorded during the execution of your Step Functions.

By monitoring and analyzing the execution event history, you can determine how close you are to reaching the quota limit. If you find that you're approaching the limit or need to manage the quota more effectively, consider implementing strategies like periodically archiving or purging older execution history data that is no longer needed.

If you require a higher quota for the execution event history, you can consider requesting a limit increase from AWS Support. They can provide guidance on the process and assess your specific requirements to determine if a limit increase is possible for your account.

  • 25,000 is the limit per execution. Meaning, if you execute the same state machine twice, each execution will have the limit of 25K entries.

Also, this limit is a hard limit and can't be increased.
