SAM adding a new stage to the 'Two-stage pipeline'

Question

I have created a SAM stack with a CI/CD pipeline using this tutorial as a guide.

I have used sam pipeline init --bootstrap to create a pipeline with the ‘Two-stage pipeline’ from template.

This template crates a pipeline with two stages, test and prod
I would like to insert a new stage in the middle, (A staging stage) 
Is there a simple way to do this?  The codepipline file with about 700 lines of cloud formation code looks very scary  😟

So I don’t want to try this if it is too complicated. I there a beginner  friendly way to do this?
