- You can use it when an item is not present, but it will cause the
FunctionExecution
error you're seeing. So it's probably not the behaviour you're wanting. - No. The error action is only triggered if a rule action suffers an error. Your rule query failed to produce a match (because the error occurred in the WHERE clause) and hence no action was triggered.

This was unexpected(and disappointing seen from my use case). Could it be an idea to update the documentation for that function (https://docs.aws.amazon.com/iot/latest/developerguide/iot-sql-functions.html#iot-sql-function-get-dynamodb)?
