F1 instances are not available to new customers. Do use F2 instance instead.
From ❗Amazon EC2 F1 End of Life Notice❗
We are retiring the F1 instances on December 20, 2025.
Only existing F1 customers who have run F1 instances anytime between Dec 2023 - Dec 2024 can restart or launch new F1 instances. Effective December 20, 2025, F1 instances or access data stored on F1 instance local storage will be no longer available. Please transfer any needed data stored in F1 instance local storage before December 20, 2025.
Based on your error message "The requested configuration is currently not supported," there are several potential issues with your F1 instance launch:
-
Account Quota Limitations: You may have a quota of 0 for running On-Demand F instances. Check your service quotas to confirm if you're allowed to launch F1 instances.
-
F1 Instance Approval: If you've never used F1 instances on this particular AWS account before, you might need additional approval to use them, even if you've used them on other accounts.
-
F2 Recommendation: For new F instance customers, AWS recommends using F2 instances instead of F1. F1 is going end-of-life on December 31st, 2025, and AWS is guiding customers to transition to the F2 platform.
-
Availability Zone Issues: The F1 instance type might not be available in all Availability Zones within us-east-1. Try specifying a different Availability Zone within the region.
-
AMI Compatibility: Ensure you're using the most up-to-date FPGA Developer AMI that's compatible with F1 instances.
To resolve this issue:
- Contact AWS Support to check for account-specific limitations and request approval for F1 instances if needed
- Ask AWS Support to increase your F instance on-demand quota and specifically enable F1 instances for your account
- Consider using F2 instances instead, as recommended by AWS for new F instance customers
- Try launching in a different Availability Zone within us-east-1
- Verify you're using the latest version of the FPGA Developer AMI
