Which account's API quota is used when a role is assumed?

If user A and user B assume the same role and both users are making a large number of AWS API requests as the assumed role, are the AWS API quotas / rate limits shared?

The API rate limits are applied to account to which the calling credentials belong.

So if user A from account X assumes role B in account Y and then makes API calls it is account Y where the limits are applied.

  • There is an answer that says the opposite, if I read this correctly. Can you elaborate please?

  • I don't know what else to add here: The limits are applied to the account where the credentials that are calling the API belong to. If you assume a role in another account (let's call that account "M") then the limits are applied to account M, not the original account where you assumed the role from.

Limits are applied account-wise. In the the case described above, the limitation is applied to the account to which gets the API Call.
