How does Amazon Q Developer Pro work with AWS Organizations and IAM Identity Center?

I want to use AWS Organizations and AWS IAM Identity Center to manage my Amazon Q Developer Pro subscriptions and settings for my organization.

Short description

Amazon Q Developer Pro requires an IAM Identity Center instance to subscribe users and groups. Use an organization instance of IAM Identity Center to manage and configure Amazon Q Developer Pro.

Resolution

Activate an organization instance

Activate an organization instance to manage Amazon Q Developer Pro subscriptions from your Organizations management account.

Note: Amazon Q Developer Pro subscription management doesn't support a delegated administrator account. You must use the organization management account to manage Amazon Q Developer Pro subscriptions.

When you use an organization instance, you have access to the following features across your organization:

Manage subscriptions with an organization or account instance

You can manage Amazon Q Developer Pro subscriptions from the Organizations management account or member accounts. However, it's a best practice to use the management account.

Use the management account to deploy an organization instance

When you use an organization instance, you can manage all your subscriptions from one account. Also, when you create a subscription from the management account, you can access Amazon Q Developer chat from any account that you have access to.

Use a member account to deploy an account instance

When you use an account instance, you can manage the subscription only from the member account. The subscription is read-only. Also, to access the Amazon Q Developer chat in other member accounts, the accounts must have a subscription to Amazon Q Developer Pro. If the member account doesn't have a subscription, then Amazon Q Developer chat defaults to the Free tier.

Note: You can subscribe a user to Amazon Q Developer Pro in all your member accounts without additional subscription charges.

For more information about the instance types, see Considerations for choosing your instance type for IAM Identity Center and Organization and account instances of IAM Identity Center.
