I want to find the charges for AWS Backup, and understand how to use cost allocation tags to track my spending.

Resolution

You can find AWS Backup costs in two different sections of your AWS bill. The location of the charges depends on whether the resource you're backing up has full AWS Backup management. To see the resource types that are eligible for full AWS Backup management, see Feature availability by resource.

  • If your backed-up resource has full AWS Backup management, then you can find charges in the Backup section of your AWS bill.
  • If your backed-up resource doesn't support full AWS Backup management, then you can find charges under the AWS service that's using AWS Backup.

To see charges for AWS Backup services, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the AWS Billing and Cost Management console.
  2. In the navigation pane, choose Bills.
  3. Choose Select billing period to specify the billing period month.
  4. Choose Charges by service
  5. For resources that have full AWS Backup management, navigate to the Backup section to see costs.

Cost allocation tags

You can use cost allocation tags to organize, categorize, and track your AWS Backup costs. There are two types of cost allocation tags, user defined and AWS generated.

Note:

  • AWS Backup copies tags from the resources it protects to your recovery points.
  • After you create user-defined tags, it can take up to 24 hours for the tags to appear on your cost allocation tags page. After you select your tags for activation, it can take up to 24 hours for tags to activate.
  • To use cost allocation tags for Amazon DynamoDB backups, turn on advanced DynamoDB backup.

To create user-defined cost allocation tags, see Using Tag Editor. To activate user-defined cost allocation tags, see Activating user-defined cost allocation tags.

To activate AWS generated cost allocation tags, see Activating the AWS generated cost allocation tags.

To view costs by cost allocation tag, see How can I use Cost Explorer to analyze my spending and usage?
