I received a scheduled maintenance notification for my Amazon Lightsail instance, and I want to understand what actions I need to take.
Short Description
When Amazon Lightsail performs scheduled maintenance on the hardware that hosts your instance, you receive an advance notification. The notification includes the maintenance window and whether your instance stops or reboots after maintenance. You can either wait for the scheduled maintenance or take action before the maintenance window begins.
Resolution
Check scheduled maintenance notification
When you receive an AWS scheduled maintenance notification, review the following information:
- The time period when AWS performs maintenance on your Lightsail instance.
- The post-maintenance action for your Lightsail instance.
Example maintenance notification:
"One or more of your Amazon Lightsail instances is scheduled for maintenance in a 2 hour window starting on Wed, 10 May 2023 12:00:00 GMT.
Maintenance activity will result in the following Lightsail instance(s) in the eu-west-2 region to be unavailable and then rebooted."
In the preceding example, note the following:
- The instance becomes unavailable for two hours on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at 12:00:00 GMT.
- After maintenance completes, AWS reboots the instance.
Actions to take for scheduled maintenance
When you receive a scheduled maintenance notification, you can either wait for the scheduled maintenance or take action before the maintenance window begins. Your options depend on whether your instance has a scheduled stop or reboot event.
Instances with scheduled stop events
For instances with a scheduled stop event, wait for the instance to stop within its scheduled maintenance window. After the instance has fully stopped, you can start it again.
You can stop and start the instance manually at your preferred time before the scheduled maintenance window. This action migrates your instance to a new host. This differs from a reboot.
For more information, see Stop a running instance and Start your instance after it's stopped.
Instances with scheduled reboot events
For instances with a scheduled reboot event, wait for the instance reboot to occur within its scheduled maintenance window. You don't need to take any further action.
You can stop and start the instance manually at your preferred time before the scheduled maintenance window. This action migrates your instance to a new host. This differs from a reboot.
The stop and start operation changes the status of the scheduled maintenance event from Active to Complete. It can take up to 1 hour to reflect the status change.
Note: When you stop then start an instance, the instance's public IP address changes. To avoid connectivity issues, use a static IP address to route external traffic to your instance.
