How do I manage EBS volumes to avoid unexpected costs in AWS?

I need to optimize my Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) volume usage and costs, and properly manage and back up my data in AWS.

Resolution

Cost optimization strategies

Optimize your Amazon EBS volumes costs with the following strategies.

Use AWS Trusted Advisor:

  • Review the "Amazon EBS over-provisioned volumes" and "Underutilized Amazon EBS Volumes" reports to identify volumes that you can delete or downsize.
  • These reports help you find attached volumes that are underused based on write activity.

Convert volume types:

Use the AWS Systems Manager Automation document "AWSConfigRemediation-ModifyEBSVolumeType" to modify multiple EBS volumes based on tags.

Review and delete unnecessary volumes and snapshots.

Backup strategies

Select a backup strategy that supports your needs.

AWS Backup features:

  • More cost-effective for volumes with partial use (for example, 1 TB volume with 300 GB used).
  • Charges are based only on the amount of backup storage used and data restored.
  • Incremental backups after the initial full backup.
  • No minimum fee or setup charges.

EBS snapshots (used by EBS Lifecycle Policy) features:

  • Billing is based on total unique data stored in each snapshot.
  • Can be more expensive for frequently changing data with long retention periods.

Optimize backup costs:

  • Implement appropriate retention policies to automatically delete old backups.
  • Use AWS Backup's lifecycle policies to move older backups to cheaper storage tiers.
  • Regularly review and clean up unused or unnecessary backups.
  • Consider cross-AWS Region and cross-account backups for additional data protection and potential cost savings.
