I want to understand when to use Amazon Redshift reserved nodes and what benefits they provide.
Resolution
Reserved node offerings
Reserved node offerings apply to compute nodes that you specify when you purchase them. Reserved nodes are a billing concept that determines the rate that you're charged for nodes. Reserved nodes are a billing option that let you reserve compute capacity for your cluster at a discount compared with on-demand rates.
Reserved nodes provide several payment offerings for a one-year or three-year term but can provide significant savings over the on-demand rates. For more information, see Comparing pricing among reserved node offerings.
How reserved nodes work
In the following scenario, you purchased four nodes of ra3.xlplus:
- You can create two clusters with two nodes each.
- Deploy one cluster with all four nodes.
- Set up four clusters with one node each.
In the preceding example, the billing benefit remains the same in all scenarios.
At the end of each billing cycle, the charges for the four specified node types are automatically applied and discounted from your bill.
Note: The Amazon Redshift leader node is provided at no additional charge. Reserved node pricing applies only to compute nodes.
For more information, see reserved node pricing.
Important: Make sure that the AWS Region, node type, and number of nodes match active reservations. You're charged the on-demand rate for nodes that don't match an active reservation. For more information, see How reserved nodes work.
