I want to manage domain settings, renewals, and WHOIS information for domains registered with Amazon Route 53.

Resolution

You can take the following actions to manage your domain that's registered with Amazon Route 53:

  • Activate or deactivate automatic domain renewal.
  • Update your domain's name servers and AWS Glue records.
  • View and change your domain's WHOIS information. For more information about WHOIS, see About Whois at the ICANN website.
  • Change your domain's contact information and ownership.
  • Activate transfer lock.
  • Configure Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) for your domain.

Note: Route 53 can't manage domains that you purchase from a third-party registrar. If you purchased your domain from a third-party registrar, then you must use the third-party to manage your domain.

Manage automatic domain renewal

Route 53 automatically renews your domain's registration before its expiration date. You can activate or deactivate automatic renewal for your domain.

If you don't manually renew a domain when automatic renewal is deactivated, then that domain expires. You can restore your expired domain.

Update your domain's name servers

You can change your domain's name servers and AWS Glue records to Route 53. You can also update your domain's name servers to use a DNS service other than Route 53. If you change the DNS service, then be sure to delete the hosted zone that Route 53 creates when you register your domain.

Note: When you change DNS settings, your changes might take up to two days to take effect. If your settings don't change after two days, see I changed DNS settings, but they haven't taken effect.

Manage your domain's WHOIS information

To view your domain's WHOIS information, see view registration details for domains that are registered with Amazon Registrar.

Run the whois command to verify registrar-level name servers:

whois example-url| grep 'Name Server'

Note: Replace example-url with your server's URL.

Update your domain's contact information and ownership

You can update your domains contact information and ownership.

Note: You don't need to authorize changes to your domain's administrative and technical contact information. However, you must use special processing to change the owner for some top-level domains.

To view the domain's ICANN status code, see Viewing the status of a domain registration.

For more information, see Updating domain settings.

Activate transfer lock

Activate transfer lock for your domain to prevent unauthorized transfer to another registrar.

Configure DNSSEC for your domain

To use DNSSEC to protect your domain against DNS spoofing attacks, complete the following steps:

  1. Verify that your domain and DNS provider meet the prerequisites for DNSSEC.
  2. Configure DNSSEC with the DNS service provider for your domain.
  3. Add the public keys to your domain.
Note: You can also delete the public keys from your domain.

If your domain is registered with Route 53, then you can also configure DNSSEC signing for your domain.
