How do I assign ownership of my AWS account to another entity?

I want to assign ownership of my AWS account and its associated resources to another entity.

Resolution

To transfer ownership of your AWS account, you must have the root user's email address and password.

Best practices before assigning ownership of an AWS account

Multi-factor authentication

If you use multi-factor authentication (MFA), then deactivate the device. Or, add another MFA device, and then deactivate unnecessary devices after the account transfer.

Default payment method

You must have a default payment method associated with the account. Make sure to work with the new owner to update or remove your payment method. For more information, see How do I change the default payment method that's associated with my AWS account?

Member account migration

To migrate AWS Organizations member accounts from one organization to another organization, see How do I move an account from an existing organization to another organization in AWS Organizations?

Assign ownership to a different entity

You need consent from AWS to assign ownership of an account to another entity. AWS publicly provides its consent to customers who want to assign an AWS account in most situations. However, you must meet the requirements on the AWS account assignment requirements page.

If you need help to determine if you satisfy these requirements, then contact your AWS representative.

If you don't meet all the AWS account assignment requirements, but you still want to assign an account, then complete the following steps:

  1. Complete the Sales support form with your information.
  2. For Use Case, choose Other.
  3. For Nature of Inquiry, choose Sales Support.
  4. For Tell us about your project, enter that you want to transfer ownership of your account.
  5. Choose Submit.

After you submit the form, an AWS Sales team member contacts you to complete the assignment process.

Update root user account access to complete the account assignment process

To assign your account to another entity, transfer root account access. Complete the following steps:

Important: These steps change the account and billing information on the root user account.

  1. Sign in to the AWS Management Console as the root user.
  2. On the navigation bar, select your account name, and then choose Account.
  3. Next to Account Settings, choose Edit.
  4. Choose Edit to update each account credential to use the new root user sign-in credentials.
Note: You can't update the email address to an email address associated with a closed account.
  5. After you update the credential, choose Save Changes.
  6. Choose Done.
  7. On the navigation bar, select your account name, and then choose Sign out.

Use the new root user credentials to sign in. For more information, see Using the AWS account root user.

I attempted the above steps to transfer to a colleague, but I get the error that "This email address is already associated with an AWS account. Try again or sign in with that account." I retired the account to which I'm trying to transfer ownership, but I still get the same error. How can I complete this transfer?

I cannot seem to get this to work. I need to change the root account email address, as the person who held the root account is no longer with the company. Similar error to above.

Hi, a customer wants to switch the maintenance of their AWS account from another service provider to my employer. This service provider has ownership of the account at the moment and we want to bring this account into our AWS-Organisation. Besides transferring the legal ownership via sales how do I import the account into our organizational structures? Do I simply invite the account after legal ownership is transferred and all infrastructure just keeps on working?

We reached the step: “After you submit your form, an AWS Sales team member will contact you to complete the assignment process.” At this point, the sales rep said the procedure in this article is not possible, and we have to open a new AWS account under the new Organization ID, manually transfer all data from the old account to the new one, and then close the old one.

...What’s up with that?
