How do I perform a manual backup in WorkSpaces?

I want to back up Amazon WorkSpaces on a recurring basis or before I start a specific task.

Resolution

WorkSpaces automatically backs up both the root and user volumes every 12 hours. Also, when you initially launch a WorkSpace, WorkSpaces performs a backup. For more information, see Restore a WorkSpace in WorkSpaces Personal.

WorkSpaces doesn't support manual backups. You must use third-party tools or network and file shares for manual backups. However, you can't use these manual backups to rebuild or restore WorkSpaces. WorkSpaces uses only internal snapshots for this process. You can use manual backups for data restoration only.

To see when WorkSpaces will take the next snapshot, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the WorkSpaces console.
  2. Select your WorkSpace.
  3. Choose View Details.
  4. Under Snapshots, find the value for Snapshot time. WorkSpaces will take the next snapshot 12 hours after the time in Snapshot time.

To improve data sharing across multiple WorkSpaces, it's a best practice to use Amazon FSx for Windows File Server.
