AWS Architecture icons vs AWS Simple icons

0

For creating AWS Architecture diagrams, we find that AWS has provided a new icons set - https://aws.amazon.com/architecture/icons/

Formerly we used to use AWS Simple icons as defined on, https://iconduck.com/sets/aws-simple-icons-for-architecture-diagrams

Is it ok to continue using simple icons or should we use only the new icon set? What are the reasons for moving away from AWS Simple icons?

Hi Radhika.

It is perfectly fine to continue using simple icons. Just note that this set is not maintained by AWS. It is an open source set designed by Balázs Buri. On the other hand, the official AWS Architecture Icons are maintained by AWS so whenever there are new services or updates to the icons, they are periodically updated.

Feel free to use either one or even both!

I hope this helps.

Both the old AWS Simple Icons and the new AWS Architecture Icons have been widely used, but AWS now officially recommends using the new icon set from https://aws.amazon.com/architecture/icons/. These new icons follow updated design standards, include more services, and are optimized for clarity, especially in cloud architecture diagrams and whitepapers.

The Simple Icons are considered outdated and no longer maintained by AWS. They also lack the visual consistency and service coverage that the new set provides.

For convenience, if you're looking to browse, search, and download both SVG and PNG versions of the latest AWS icons, you can use https://awsicon.com — it's a free community resource that makes working with the latest AWS icons much easier, especially when preparing documentation or diagrams.

So, while you're not technically restricted from using the old icons, it's best to transition to the new set to align with AWS's branding and design guidelines.
