Domain transfer - glue records

0

Hi, I have a .com domain with glue records for a Plesk instance serving several websites which I want to transfer to AWS/Route53 in a few weeks time.

Are there any special steps/considerations with regard to the glue records? Will they be transferred/copied/cloned during the normal transfer process?

p.s. I have transferred domains successfully in the past to AWS however, as above, I need to prevent service interruption in this case.

Many thanks for assistance/advice.

regards, ron1n

If the Regsitrar isnt proving a DNS Service, then the NS Records shouldnt change.

If you're transferring one or more domain registrations to Route 53, and you're currently using a domain registrar that doesn't provide paid DNS service, you need to migrate DNS service before you migrate the domain. Otherwise, the registrar will stop providing DNS service when you transfer your domains, and the associated websites and web applications will become unavailable on the internet. (You can also migrate DNS service from the current registrar to another DNS service provider. We don't require you to use Route 53 as the DNS service provider for domains that are registered with Route 53.)

The process depends on whether you're currently using the domain:

  • If the domain is currently getting traffic—for example, if your users are using the domain name to browse to a website or access a web application—see Making Route 53 the DNS service for a domain that's in use.
  • If the domain isn't getting any traffic (or is getting very little traffic), see Making Route 53 the DNS service for an inactive domain.

For both options, your domain should remain available during the entire migration process. However, in the unlikely event that there are issues, the first option lets you roll back the migration quickly. With the second option, your domain could be unavailable for a couple of days.

Hi & thank you Gary,

I should have specified that a Lightsail instance currently contains/hosts the Plesk server so DNS/IP etc services are provided by Route53/AWS/Lightsail for the last few years so no problem there.

I've also had no issues transferring domains from third-party registrars to Route53 or adding Route53 purchased domains to the Plesk server by setting all new domains' nameserver accordingly e.g. ns1.mydomain.com , ns2.mydomain.com .

The domain(s) are currently getting traffic.

In the case of this particular domain, it had glue records added by the current registrar previously and was also the first domain on the Plesk server and provides ns1 and ns2 records for the rest of the domains, if I unlock and transfer this particular domain from the third-party registrar to Route53 will the glue records transfer also?

If you need any further information please let me know and thanks again for the assistance.

regards, ron1n.

Hey Ronin, Ive never done it before with R53, but it says its optional to transfer the DNS Service which means the Glue Records shouldnt be touched. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/Route53/latest/DeveloperGuide/domain-transfer-to-route-53.html?icmpid=docs_console_unmapped#domain-transfer-to-route-53-transfer-dns

Worse case make a note of your NS records before you transfer just in case.
