How does one unit test VTL when dealing with api-gateway construct from CDK

Currently using openapi definition in conjunction of CDK in python to produce api-gateway definition resources (REST), how does one test as code (unit or functional) to ensure that nothing breaks accidently?

assuming you are in the nodejs ecosystem you could write unit tests using api-gateway-template-tester.
