Elastic Beanstalk on Amazon Linux 2 is Silently Ignoring .ebextensions Folder

0

Hello,

My Elastic Beanstalk environment is not processing a valid .ebextensions folder from my source bundle. This is preventing a critical Nginx configuration from being applied.

Platform: Python 3.9 on 64bit Amazon Linux 2023

I have confirmed through extensive troubleshooting that this is a platform issue:

  1. My source bundle is structured correctly with the .ebextensions folder at the root, and the .config file has valid YAML syntax and UTF-8 encoding.
  2. I have verified the zip structure is correct by downloading the source bundle from the S3 link on the "Application Versions" page and inspecting its contents.
  3. The issue persists even after creating a brand new environment from scratch, proving it is not a corrupted environment state.
  4. The result is that files specified in the "files:" section of my .ebextensions configuration are never created on the EC2 instance.

Please investigate why the deployment service for this platform is not processing a valid .ebextensions folder.

Based on the information provided, there are a few important points to consider regarding your issue with .ebextensions not being processed on Amazon Linux 2023.

First, it's worth noting that the deployment workflow for Elastic Beanstalk environments can vary depending on the platform. For ECS running on Amazon Linux 2 and later, the deployment Configuration phase does not support certain extensibility features that might be available on other platform branches.

For your specific case with Python on Amazon Linux 2023, you should check if your configuration files are properly structured and placed. The .ebextensions directory must be at the root level of your deployment package. When Elastic Beanstalk encounters validation errors in a configuration file, such as an invalid key, it ignores the entire file and doesn't process any of the other keys in that file. When this happens, Elastic Beanstalk adds a warning event to the event log.

I recommend checking your environment's events while developing and testing configuration files. This can provide valuable information about why your configurations might be ignored. Also, ensure that your file permissions are set correctly for any files you're trying to create or modify.

For Nginx configurations specifically, you should ensure that your configuration files are placed in the correct directory structure. For example, Nginx configuration files might need to be placed in .platform/nginx/conf.d/elasticbeanstalk/ rather than directly in .ebextensions.

If you're still experiencing issues, you might need to rebuild your environment to apply the changes properly. Sometimes a full rebuild is necessary for certain configuration changes to take effect.
