This notification is about AWS CloudShell's persistent storage deletion policy. CloudShell provides a browser-based shell environment for interacting with AWS services, and it includes 1GB of persistent storage in your home directory for each AWS Region.
When you don't use CloudShell in a specific Region for 120 days, AWS automatically deletes the data stored in that Region's persistent storage. In your case, some users in your account haven't used CloudShell in the ap-southeast-2 (Sydney) Region for over 110 days, so AWS is warning you that their data will be deleted on October 1, 2025.
To prevent this deletion, the affected users simply need to launch CloudShell in the ap-southeast-2 Region. Here's how:
- Sign in to the AWS Management Console
- Navigate to CloudShell by clicking on the CloudShell icon in the console navigation bar or by going directly to the CloudShell console in the ap-southeast-2 Region
- Once CloudShell launches in that Region, the 120-day timer will reset
It's important to note that this only affects data stored in CloudShell's persistent storage in the ap-southeast-2 Region. Your S3 buckets and the files you've uploaded to them are completely separate and will not be affected by this CloudShell data deletion.
If you don't actively use CloudShell and don't have any important data stored in its home directory, you can safely ignore this notification as it won't impact your S3 buckets or any other AWS resources.

ohhhhhhhhhhh wow, thankyou so much!
I don't know if I have any important data stored in its home directory. I used to use a storage program that utilised buckets that connect to my AWS so maybe it's from that?
In the CloudShell console should I click on any actions?... eg.. There's a drop-down list available on the right.
Hello.
I don't know if I have any important data stored in its home directory. I used to use a storage program that utilised buckets that connect to my AWS so maybe it's from that?
When you access CloudShell, storage is created for the user who accessed it.
Storage will be created if you have accessed CloudShell and performed operations in the past.
This storage will be automatically deleted if you have not accessed it for more than 120 days.

If you stop using AWS CloudShell in an AWS Region, data is retained in the persistent storage of that Region for 120 days after the end of your last session. After 120 days, unless you take action, your data is automatically deleted from the persistent storage of that Region. You can prevent removal by launching AWS CloudShell again in that AWS Region. For more information, see Step 2: Select a Region, launch AWS CloudShell, and choose a shell.
In the CloudShell console should I click on any actions?... eg.. There's a drop-down list available on the right.
Simply open the CloudShell screen with an IAM user who has previously used CloudShell and your data will be retained.
No other action is required.
I generally recommend using CloudShell as a temporary shell environment.
Therefore, please do not store persistent program data or similar data on it.
Thankyou so much, Riku. You've been incredibly helpful. I appreciate that big time.
