How to troubleshoot CloudFront 503 Errors

My customer is seeing an alarming number of 5xx (503) errors on their most active CloudFront distribution.

The distribution's origin is an S3 bucket containing frequently required assets. The S3 bucket metrics do not show the same failures, leading them to assume the CloudFront distribution itself is at fault. Are there other metrics we should be checking to help identify the root cause of this issue?

Please check the CloudFront access logs for more details on the kind of error you are getting, especially the x-edge-detailed-result-type field.
