Extended suport postgree 12.19

0

Hello,

We have some RDS instances with Postgree 12.19 which will end its standar support on 02/2025. Checking the options to migrate i see that the newest version available is 16.3, which end of standard support is on 09/2025, so in 7 nmonths we will have the same problem. The newest versions witrh extended support for upgrade (03/2026) are not available... will them be available when i upgrade to 16.3? According to the dopcumentation it looks like from the 16.3 i will be only available to upgrade to 16.4 which has the same end date of standar support.

I ahve checked this pages for the information of the dates of release and end standard support and the available choices of upgrade:

Thanks for your help!!

Hi,

Based on this table, if you upgrade to v16, you are good until 2029 with Standard Support and until 2030 if you go with v17.

  • But according to the minor version table the Postgre 16.3 would end it's standard suport on 09/2025... i understood that the most restrictive date would be the one that would be used no? The minor version table is in the same LInk but under the title "Release calendar for Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL minor versions"

    Thanks for your help!!

Thank you for your question about PostgreSQL versions and extended support on Amazon RDS. Let me clarify a few points for you.

First, you're correct that PostgreSQL 12.19 will reach end of standard support on February 28, 2025. It's good that you're planning ahead for this transition.

Regarding PostgreSQL 16.3, which is currently the latest version available on Amazon RDS, it's important to note that the end of standard support date for major version 16 is actually November 2028, not September 2025 as you mentioned. This gives you a much longer window of standard support than you initially thought.

When you upgrade to PostgreSQL 16.3, you will indeed be able to take advantage of future minor version upgrades within the 16.x series as they become available. These minor version upgrades often include important security patches and bug fixes.

As for extended support, Amazon RDS typically offers this for major versions that are nearing end of standard support. While extended support options may not be visible for version 16 right now, this is because it's still relatively new and far from its end of standard support date. Extended support options usually become available closer to the end of standard support date for a given major version.

It's also worth noting that Amazon RDS continually works on making newer PostgreSQL versions available. By the time you need to consider upgrading from version 16, there will likely be newer major versions available with even later support end dates.

For now, upgrading to PostgreSQL 16.3 would be a good move, as it will provide you with standard support until November 2028, which is a significant extension compared to your current version. As you approach that date, you'll have options to either upgrade to a newer major version that will be available by then or potentially use extended support if needed.

Remember to regularly check the Amazon RDS documentation and announcements for the most up-to-date information on PostgreSQL versions, support dates, and available upgrade paths.
