MediaLive produces costs while idling

0

I'm just confused here. Recently, I created a Elemental MediaLive channel, just to understand how to do it. I NEVER STARTED IT, so it just was created, on status "idle".
Now, AWS has billed me $8.51 for that. After digged into that bill specifics, I saw this:

$0.01/hour for Standard Pipeline idle outputs in EU (Frankfurt)

I'm still puzzled here. AWS marketing is all about "you only pay what you use". This feels like a real scam.

Is there any way to avoid this? I guess (I hope), I could just delete the entire MediaLive channel, but then I need to put in a lot of time some day in the future, when I need it. Maybe I'm getting charged for visiting the website and deleting too? lmao Amazon, Uncle Bezos really needs some money, does he?

Hi Meinungsverbrecher,

MediaLive does have a small idle charge for channels and push inputs. One of the things that happens when you create a push input or a channel is that MediaLive assigns fixed IP addresses for those resources. This is important because it allows you to setup firewall rules, configure upstream and downstream systems, and not have to change those between channel runs for event-based workflows.

If you would like to save your channel configuration and don't require these fixed addresses for your environment, you can download the channel configuration via the "Download custom template" option in the "Channel Actions" drop-down (upper-right corner of the channel detail page). This will download the configuration in JSON format to your browser's download folder.

Once you have the configuration saved, you can delete the channel and any attached inputs. When you want to recreate this channel configuration, you can select a custom template from the "Channel and Input details" page when you start the create-channel process.

I hope you find this information helpful, please reply back if you have any additional questions.

Regards,
Steve
