While AWS offers various options for hosting WordPress websites, setting up a HIPAA-compliant WordPress hosting service requires careful consideration and additional steps beyond a standard WordPress deployment.
For HIPAA-compliant hosting, you'll need to focus on several key areas:
- Secure infrastructure: Use Amazon VPC to create an isolated network environment.
- Encryption: Implement encryption for data at rest and in transit using services like AWS Key Management Service (KMS).
- Access control: Utilize AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) to manage access to resources.
- Logging and monitoring: Implement AWS CloudTrail for API call logging and AWS Config for configuration management.
- Database security: Use Amazon RDS with encryption enabled for your WordPress database.
While there isn't a specific step-by-step guide for HIPAA-compliant WordPress hosting, you can start by deploying WordPress using Amazon Lightsail, Amazon EC2, or through the AWS Marketplace. Then, you'll need to implement additional security measures to ensure HIPAA compliance.
For HIPAA-specific guidance, AWS provides a HIPAA Reference Architecture that outlines best practices for creating a compliant environment. This includes using services like Elastic Load Balancer, Amazon EC2, Amazon RDS, Amazon S3, and Amazon SNS in a secure configuration.
Regarding customer support for HIPAA-compliant hosting, AWS offers various support plans, including Basic, Developer, Business, and Enterprise. While the Basic plan is free, it doesn't provide technical support. For personalized guidance on HIPAA compliance, you may want to consider a paid support plan, particularly the Business or Enterprise tier, which offer more comprehensive assistance.
It's important to note that while AWS can provide a HIPAA-eligible environment, achieving full HIPAA compliance involves more than just the technical infrastructure. You'll also need to implement appropriate policies, procedures, and documentation to meet all HIPAA requirements.
Lastly, remember that HIPAA compliance is an ongoing process that requires regular assessment and updates to ensure continued adherence to the regulations.

You can deploy wordpress on any of the following : EC2, EKS, ECS since they are HIPPA compiant https://aws.amazon.com/compliance/hipaa-eligible-services-reference/
However only the infrastructure will be compliant. AWS doesn't takes responsibility for the software that is deployed and it is up to you to address the compatibility. This is called shared responsibility model

One thing to be aware of about WordPress and HIPAA compliance. Aside from the infrastructure details, WordPress is not compliant on its own, you will need some plugins and processes to make sure you accomplish this. This is not exhaustive, but it will give you an idea.
- Make sure you have BAA's with all integration services you are using, like Cloudflare or Email sending services in the site.
- Make sure you user names are not generic, like support@ sales@ etc.
- Make sure you use a plugin for 2FA, this is not a out of the box feature in WordPress.
- Make sure you have a plugin for Audit Logging in WordPress, again not an out of the box feature.
- Make sure you have malware scanning or some security plugin to harden WordPress. This is just a few examples, here are some links.
