When selecting Intel-based EC2 instances like the R6i or M6i series, AWS specifies that these instances use 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, also known by the codename "Ice Lake." However, AWS does not explicitly state whether these are Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze tier processors in their public documentation.
The 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors used in these EC2 instances are designed to provide high performance for a wide range of workloads. They offer improvements in areas such as compute, memory, and networking capabilities compared to previous generations.
For example, the M6i instances powered by these processors offer up to 15% better price performance compared to M5 instances. Similarly, R6i instances, which are memory-optimized, also deliver up to 15% better price performance compared to R5 instances.
These processors in EC2 instances come with features like an all-core turbo frequency of 3.5 GHz and always-on memory encryption using Intel Total Memory Encryption (TME). They support up to 128 vCPUs per instance, which is a significant increase from previous generations.
While the specific tier (Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze) is not disclosed, the performance characteristics and features of these EC2 instances suggest that AWS is using high-performance variants of the 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors to meet the demanding requirements of cloud computing workloads.
