Will Upgrading from 1 Gbps to 5 Gbps Direct Connect Hosted Connection Cause Disruptions?

0

Hi AWS Community,

We currently have a 1 Gbps Direct Connect hosted connection, and we are planning to upgrade to a 5 Gbps connection for same connection. I would like to know if this upgrade is likely to cause any disruptions to our network. Specifically, we are concerned about potential downtime and the impact on our services during the upgrade process.

We have some critical services running through this connection. We are currently using a transit virtual interface (VIF).

Could you please advise on the best practices for performing this upgrade with minimal disruption? Any tips on coordinating with the service provider, scheduling, and pre/post-upgrade testing would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi,

You will be interested in this post: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/networking-and-content-delivery/upgrading-aws-direct-connect-to-100-gbps-in-5-steps/

The safest way if you can afford the additional costs is to create the new 5 Gbps in parallel to 1 GBps, test it and then incrementally switch traffic form old to new with BGP routing.

Best,

Didier

  • Thank you, Didier, for sharing the information. Additionally, I read the following on this post: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/directconnect/latest/UserGuide/hosted_connection.html

    • Connection port speeds can only be changed by your AWS Direct Connect Partner. You are no longer required to delete and recreate a connection to upgrade or downgrade an existing hosted connection's bandwidth. To change your port speed, please contact the AWS Direct Connect Partner who manages your hosted connection.

If we plan not to choose an option with additional costs, will this still be feasible? Will it cause any disruptions?

  • Hi Ali Md, the right person to ask this question is your Direct Connect partner who is providing the link to AWS network. He's the only one to know its upgrade procedure to determine if it will cause downtime or not. Unfortunately, there is no global / generic answer to this question. Thanks for accepting my answer! See this rePost article, you will need to contact the Direct Connect delivery partner that provided the hosted connection:

  • Thanks, Tushar, for sharing the post.

My Direct Connect (DX) partner/service provider is planning to create a new 5Gbps connection. They have informed us that once this connection is accepted, the plan is to switch the existing Transit VIF from the old connection to the new one.

Based on the general configuration options for VIFs, there is an option to select and edit the physical connection on which the new virtual interface will be provisioned.

My understanding is that once the new connection is accepted, I should be able to switch the VIF from the old connection to the new one. Please let me know if this is correct.
