Claude 4 availability in EU regions

0

Hi,

I am trying to use Claude 4 model in eu-central-1 region. Model should be available through inference profile. In Playground, when I try to ask something it throws me an error like:

User: arn:aws:sts::---:assumed-role/AWSReservedSSO_AWSAdministratorAccess_---/--- Action: bedrock:InvokeModelWithResponseStream On resource(s): arn:aws:bedrock:eu-south-2::foundation-model/anthropic.claude-sonnet-4-20250514-v1:0 Context: a service control policy explicitly denies the action

Our admin says it's a "known issue" and we should use us-west-2 region but I have doubts regarding this.

Questions:

  1. Is Claude 4 available in eu-central-1 region?
  2. If yes, do I need access to eu-south-2 (Spain) region in order to invoke model in my eu-central-1 (Frankfurt) region?
  3. If yes, what type of access I need?

Based on the available information, I can address your questions about Claude 4 availability in EU regions:

  1. Yes, Claude Sonnet 4 is available in eu-central-1 (Frankfurt) region. It's not available as a direct single-region model but is accessible through cross-region inference.

  2. The error message suggests that your request is being routed to eu-south-2 (Spain) as part of the cross-region inference system. Amazon Bedrock uses cross-region inference profiles to optimize performance and availability by routing requests across multiple AWS Regions based on real-time capacity and performance metrics.

  3. You need appropriate permissions to access the model through cross-region inference. The error message indicates that a service control policy (SCP) is explicitly denying the action in eu-south-2. This suggests that your organization has restrictions on accessing resources in that region.

To resolve this issue, you would need:

  • Your administrator to modify the service control policy to allow access to the foundation model in eu-south-2
  • Alternatively, your administrator could configure permissions to use a different cross-region inference profile that routes to regions you have access to

Cross-region inference for Claude models works by defining inference profiles for each geographic area (such as the EU) that include multiple destination regions where your requests might be processed. When you make a request in eu-central-1, it might be routed to any of the available EU regions where the model is deployed, including eu-south-2.

The "known issue" your admin mentioned likely refers to these permission restrictions in EU regions, which is why they suggested using us-west-2 as an alternative.
