Title: Amazon Q Developer Pro subscription active, but VS Code only shows Free

0

Hello,

I recently subscribed to Amazon Q Developer Pro. In my AWS Builder Console I can see that the subscription is active, but it is associated with a Builder ID shown only as a UUID (e.g. 34285458---****-cfe676aacd8c) instead of my usual username/email.

📎 Screenshot attached showing the Pro subscription status in my Builder account.

The problem is: in VS Code, the Amazon Q extension does not recognize me as Pro. It always falls back to the Free tier, even after:

clearing cache and cookies,

reinstalling the extension,

logging out and logging back in multiple times.

I saw other answers about IAM Identity Center users, but in my case I’m working alone, without an organization or collaborators. My understanding is that for a personal use case the Pro subscription should be directly linked to my Builder ID, so I shouldn’t need to create an Identity Center user.

My question: How can I ensure that the Amazon Q extension in VS Code uses the same Builder ID that has the Pro subscription? Is there a way to explicitly select that Builder ID UUID at login, or to migrate the subscription to my primary identity?

Any guidance from AWS staff or other developers who solved this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello,

I have subscribed to Amazon Q Developer Pro and created a Q Developer profile. However, in VS Code the extension never shows the option “Use with Pro license”.

What happens:

In the sidebar, when I open the Amazon Q panel, I can only sign in with my Builder ID.

After signing in, the extension always shows Free tier.

The option “Use with Pro license → Continue” is missing entirely.

In the Q Developer console:

I can see my Q Developer profile,

but no Free plan is shown and therefore no Upgrade to Pro button.

This suggests that my Builder ID profile is missing the default Free/Pro assignment.

My questions:

Why is the “Use with Pro license” option not appearing in VS Code?

How can I restore the default Free tier in my Builder ID profile so I can upgrade to Pro again?

I am working alone (no IAM Identity Center, no organization). From the documentation, a Builder ID should be sufficient for using Q Developer Pro in VS Code.

Finally, since this issue is directly tied to the Q Developer subscription itself, I hope it can be resolved without requiring a separate paid AWS Support plan.

Thank you for your help!

Hello.

After signing in with your Builder ID, you can subscribe to the Pro plan from VS Code as follows:
Clicking here will open the AWS management console and you will be subscribed.

  • I ran the aws.amazonq.manageSubscription command from VS Code. It correctly opens the Subscriptions page in the browser, where I can see my Q Developer Pro subscription marked as Active. However, the VS Code extension still only shows the Free tier and does not reflect the Pro status. Could you please check why the Pro entitlement is not being applied to my Builder ID in the IDE?

  • I understand the continued confusion,

I found this article that will walk you through common errors and troubleshooting steps: https://repost.aws/knowledge-center/amazonq-developer-authentication-errors.

If your subscription is still missing, our agents in your Support Center have the tools to dig further into this: http://go.aws/support-center.

  • Yes, I’ve already opened a case in the Support Center, but so far it was routed to Billing and closed as “out of scope.”
I’m opening a new case now, clearly requesting escalation to the Amazon Q Developer service team, since this is a service delivery issue.

If you've subscribed to Amazon Q Developer Pro but it's still showing as Free tier in VS Code, there are several potential solutions to try:

  1. Timing: If you recently subscribed to the Pro tier, there might be a delay in activation. Although activation typically takes 30 minutes to 1 hour, in some cases it can take up to 24 hours for the subscription to become fully active.

  2. Sign out and sign back in: If you recently switched from the Free tier to the Pro tier, try completely signing out of Amazon Q in VS Code and then signing back in again.

  3. Verify your sign-in method: For personal use with a Builder ID (which appears to be your case), you should be able to use the Pro tier in VS Code. The Pro tier with Builder ID is supported in IDEs like VS Code, even without an organization or IAM Identity Center setup.

  4. Check extension configuration: In VS Code:

  • Click on the Amazon Q icon in the sidebar
  • Select "Use with Pro license" and click "Continue"
  • Follow the authentication process to sign in with your Builder ID
  1. Verify subscription status: Double-check that your Amazon Q Developer Pro subscription is indeed active in your AWS Builder Console.

If you've verified all these steps and are still experiencing issues after 24 hours, you may need to contact AWS support for further assistance, as there might be an issue with how the subscription is linked to your Builder ID.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply and for sharing the knowledge center article.
I have carefully followed all of the troubleshooting steps (clearing cache, reinstalling extensions, sign out/sign in with the correct Builder ID, confirming region, etc.), but the issue still persists.

My subscription to Amazon Q Developer Pro is active (status: ACTIVE in the AWS console, logs also show mode=paidtier), however Pro features such as "Run Security Scan" and "Code Review" are still not available in VS Code.

This is important for my current work and I urgently need access to these Pro features. Could you please escalate this case so that the technical team can directly investigate my account and subscription link?

Thank you for your support.

I already have an active Amazon Q Developer Pro subscription (visible in the Subscriptions page), but in VS Code the extension always shows only Free tier and no Pro features.

This is not a configuration mistake on my side — it is a service delivery issue: the Pro entitlements are not being applied to my Builder ID.

I have opened multiple support cases, but so far Billing has closed them as "out of scope" and no technical team has followed up.

The result is that I am paying for a Pro subscription but not receiving the service. This should not require a separate paid Support plan — it is an AWS-side issue that prevents delivery of a paid service, and it should be treated with urgency.

Can AWS please escalate this to the Amazon Q Developer service team?

Hi Daniele,

I'm so sorry to hear about the continued frustration. However, we're unable to discuss it further via this platform. We've shared your sentiment with our internal teams. Please continue to work with our teams via your case and make sure to review all case replies for instructions and next steps: go.aws/support-center.

If you need assistance urgently, requesting a call through the Support Center is the quickest way to get this looked at. Select "Phone" as your contact method when creating your case & our next available agent will be able to assist you: https://go.aws/phone-support.
