AWS Glue is recommended for ETL based discovery, preparation and extraction of data, where as Appflow is a managed integration service for data transfer between API based data sources. Glue is recommended for ODP based extraction (eg from SAP BW) which is not yet supported by AppFlow. Glue/Lambda requires you to deploy code provided, maintain and upgrade when necessary, where as AppFlow is a no-code solution with a point and click interface.

**UPDATE - Amazon AppFlow now supports data transfers from SAP applications to AWS Services using SAP Operational Data Provisioning (ODP) . **It is the recommended way for extracting SAP data. https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2022/08/amazon-appflow-supports-data-sap-applications-aws-services-operational-data-provisioning/

Amazon AppFlow, a fully managed integration service that helps customers to securely transfer data between AWS services and software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications in just a few clicks, now supports data transfers from SAP applications to AWS Services using SAP Operational Data Provisioning (ODP) framework. With this launch AppFlow customers can use the AppFlow SAP OData connector to perform full and incremental data transfers, including Change Data Capture using SAP Operational Delta Queue, from SAP ERP/BW applications (including ECC, BW, BW/4HANA and S/4HANA) to AWS services such as Amazon S3.

This launch enhances the AppFlow SAP OData connector by adding support for SAP ODP framework and enables a variety of use cases such as initial transfer of Master Data (like Material or Plant Information) or Transactional Data (like Purchase or Consignment Orders) from SAP ERP (S/4HANA, ECC) to a data lake on Amazon S3, and subsequent data transfers for any changes in the source SAP system, allowing customers to have the most current view of their data in their data lake on Amazon S3.
