Alternative factors not working

-1

Below is my steps

  1. go to the AWS Management Console
  2. click "Sign in using root user email"
  3. select "root user", enter my email in "Email address" and click "Next"
  4. enter my password in "Password" and click "Sign in"
  5. "MFA code" displays, click "Trouble sign in?"
  6. select "Sign in using alternative factors" and click "Next"
  7. Enter my password in "password' and click "sign in" 8 . "MFA code" displays again.

Alternative factors not work even it is selected in step 6

And how can i check if my email address is a root user, IAM user or AWS builder ID?

Thanks Feng QI

I understand you're experiencing issues with alternative factors for MFA when signing in as a root user. Let me address both of your concerns:

Regarding Alternative Factors Not Working:

The behavior you're experiencing where the MFA code prompt reappears after selecting "Sign in using alternative factors" suggests there may be an issue with your alternative factor configuration or the authentication flow. Alternative factors for root user sign-in typically include options like email verification or phone verification as backup methods when you cannot access your primary MFA device.

If alternative factors aren't working as expected, you may need to:

  • Verify that alternative factors were properly configured when you set up MFA
  • Ensure you're following the complete alternative factor verification process (which may include checking your email or phone for verification codes)
  • If you're completely locked out, you may need to contact AWS Support for account recovery assistance

Regarding Identifying Your Account Type:

To determine what type of account you have:

Root User: This is the email address you used when you first created your AWS account. Root users have complete access to all AWS services and resources. You sign in using the root user email option on the sign-in page.

IAM User: These are users created within an AWS account by the root user or an administrator. IAM users sign in using an account ID (12-digit number) or account alias along with their IAM username - not an email address directly.

AWS Builder ID: This is a separate identity used for AWS developer tools and resources. It's not used to access the AWS Management Console for your AWS account resources.

Since you're using the "Sign in using root user email" option with your email address, you are signing in as a root user.

I recommend contacting AWS Support directly if you continue to have issues accessing your account with alternative factors, as they can assist with account recovery.
