NAT Gateway for AppStream 2.0

0

When creating a new AppStream VPC according to the Getting Started Guide at https://d1.awsstatic.com/product-marketing/AppStream2.0/Amazon%20AppStream%202.0%20Getting%20Started%20Guide%20April%202018.pdf, a NAT Gateway is included in the setup.

The NAT Gateway has its own costs which are not part of the published costs of the AppStream service. Thus I would like to know whether this NAT Gateway is essential for functioning of the AppStream. What will be lost if there is no NAT Gateway? For example, will the Image Builder still work? Will users lose Internet access so they cannot use a streamed browser, for example?

Hi johnsgp -

The NAT gateway provides image builder and fleet streaming instances in your VPC access to the Internet in a secured fashion. If your applications don't require Internet access, or you don't intend to use the third-party storage integrations like Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, you can safely not add the NAT gateway to your VPC. If you plan to use any of the features that require the streaming instance to access S3 (Home Folder, App Settings Persistence), you can create an S3 endpoint to provide access without the VPC having Internet access. You can learn more about this here: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/appstream2/latest/developerguide/managing-network-vpce-iam-policy.html

Hope this helps.
