I am using ami: Windows_Server-2022-English-Full-Base-2024.09.11

while using the instance type as large and trying to install windows update using the image builder getting 1 update which is failing to install after 6 attempts:

Updates to process: 1 2024-09-23T17:25:52.908000+00:00 1.0.18/1 Stdout: The following updates were found: 2024-09-23T17:25:52.935000+00:00 1.0.18/1 Stdout: - Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus - KB2267602 (Version 1.419.136.0) - Current Channel (Broad)

while when using the instance type: xlarge. it is showing 0 updates: Searching for updates. 2024-09-23T17:39:38.086000+00:00 1.0.19/1 Stdout: Updates to process: 0 2024-09-23T17:39:38.087000+00:00 1.0.19/1 Stdout: Updates to download: 0 2024-09-23T17:39:38.089000+00:00 1.0.19/1 Stdout: Updates to install: 0

Why is it behaving different for the same ami with just 2 different instance type.

Hi prakash

the issue you're experiencing with Windows Update failing on a Large instance type, but succeeding on an Xlarge instance type, using the same AMI (Windows_Server-2022-English-Full-Base-2024.09.11), is puzzling. Here are potential reasons and solutions:

Reasons:

  1. Resource constraints: Large instances might not provide sufficient resources (CPU, memory, or disk space) for Windows Update to complete successfully.
  2. Temporary network issues: Network connectivity problems might prevent updates from downloading or installing.
  3. Instance configuration: Differences in instance configuration, such as available disk space, temporary storage, or networking settings, could affect Windows Update.
  4. AMI-specific issues: The AMI might have underlying issues or configurations that affect Windows Update on certain instance types.
