To close your AWS account and stop future charges, you need to follow these steps:
-
Sign in to the AWS Management Console as the root user of your account (not as an IAM user or role). You must use the root user credentials to close an account.
-
In the upper-right corner of the navigation bar, click on your account name or number, then select "Account".
-
On the Account page, scroll down and find the "Close account" button.
-
You'll need to confirm by typing your account ID (which will be displayed in the closure dialog box).
-
Click the "Close account" button again to complete the process.
You should receive an email confirmation within a few minutes that your account has been closed.
If you're having trouble accessing your account as the root user, you may need to recover access first. If you can't close your account following these steps, I recommend contacting AWS Support directly for assistance with closing your account and resolving any outstanding charges.
Please note that even after closing your account, you may receive a final bill for usage incurred between the beginning of the month and the date you closed your account. For example, if you close your account on the 15th of the month, you'll receive a bill at the beginning of the next month for usage from the 1st to the 15th.

Hi there,
If you’ve lost access to your root account, you’ll need to recover it before you can manage or close the account. You can follow the steps in our documentation here: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/IAM/latest/UserGuide/id_root-user.html.
If you’re unable to recover the account using those steps, we recommend opening a case via our Support Center so our team can assist you directly: http://go.aws/support-center.
