Custom domain name not resolvable

I've set up a custom domain name for an API gateway HTTP API. I can see the record in Route 53, but several hours later the domain is not resolvable in DNS. Am I missing something?

I had created the route 53 record before setting up the custom domain in API gateway - doing it the other way round worked fine.
