In Amazon QuickSight, you can indeed adjust the granularity of your date field to display hourly ticks for each day, even for higher frequency data. However, there are a few things to consider:
-
Date field granularity: Make sure you've set the date field granularity to "Hour" in the field well or on-visual editor. This option is only available if your field contains time data.
-
Data completeness: QuickSight's behavior with missing data can affect how your visual is displayed. If you have a week of hourly observations but one hour of data is missing on one day, it won't necessarily cause the visual to default to a daily average. Instead, QuickSight offers options for handling missing data points in line charts and area charts:
- Broken line: This is the default setting, where the line breaks when a data point is missing.
- Continuous line: The line skips over the missing data point and connects to the next available point.
- Show as zero: The missing data point is set to zero.
You can customize how missing data is displayed by selecting the visual, choosing the "Format visual" icon, opening the Y axis pane in the format visual menu, and selecting your preferred option in the "Missing data" section.
- X-axis settings: Ensure that the "Show date gaps" option in the X axis pane is checked if you want to see all hourly intervals, even when data is missing.
If you're still unable to see hourly ticks after adjusting these settings, it might be worth checking if your data source is actually providing hourly level data. Sometimes, data sources may aggregate data to a daily level before it reaches QuickSight.
Remember, QuickSight aims to create the most readable visualization based on your data. If you have a large date range with hourly data, it might choose to display daily or weekly intervals by default to keep the visual clear. You may need to zoom in on a smaller date range to see the hourly ticks.
